What is a host agency?
A host agency lets independent travel advisors sell travel under an established company's accreditation — gaining supplier access and higher commissions while keeping their own brand. Below: how host agencies work, how commissions are split, and how a host compares to a franchise.
What is a host agency?
A host agency is a travel company that lets independent travel advisors sell travel under its accreditation. Rather than applying for your own IATA, CLIA or ARC number — which takes time, sales volume and bonding — you "hang your license" with a host. The host provides the accreditation, established supplier relationships and higher commission tiers, plus back-office support, while you run your own client-facing brand and keep your independence.
How do host agency commissions work?
When you book a trip, the supplier pays commission to the host agency under its accreditation number. The host then passes your share to you based on an agreed commission split. Splits commonly run from about 70% up to 100% to the advisor — higher splits often come with a monthly or annual membership fee, while lower splits usually mean no fee and more hand-holding. Your sales volume and the host's model determine where you land.
What is the difference between a host agency and a franchise?
A host agency lets you keep your own brand and work as an independent contractor; you pay for accreditation and support but stay in control of your business identity. A franchise is the opposite trade-off: you operate under the franchisor's brand and proven system, typically with a larger upfront investment and ongoing royalties, in return for a more turnkey, structured business. Host = independence with support; franchise = a packaged business model.
Who should join a host agency?
New and growing travel advisors who want supplier access and higher commissions without the burden of their own accreditation, and experienced agents who'd rather focus on selling than on back-office compliance. If you value your own brand and flexibility, a host usually fits better than a franchise.
